Funding

The Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) announces the availability of awards that support access to health information for libraries, consumers, health professionals and in particular reaching underserved populations; enhance the capacity of libraries to share resources, strengthen network member librarians' skills in the use of NLM databases and increase the visibility of the NN/LM and NLM products and services.

Awards are for network members to conduct or obtain training, host conferences, purchase or upgrade technology and conduct outreach that raises the awareness of health information resources available to health professionals, consumers and librarians.

What awards are available?

  • Electronic Access/Document Delivery Access to Health Information Awards - Currently Available
    For Full Network members to encourage and facilitate access to the biomedical literature by unaffiliated health professionals, including the use of Loansome Doc, development of a web portal, and establishment of partnerships between libraries and unaffiliated health professionals or health professions groups. Three awards up to $10,000 each are available. Deadline is December 15, 2008.

  • Outreach Training Awards - Currently Available
    For Full and Affiliate Network members to train and promote awareness of the products and services of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and NN/LM. Two awards up to $10,000 each are available. Deadline is December 15, 2008.

  • Presentation/Professional Development Awards - Currently Available
    For Full and Affiliate Network members to present on library and information services at a meeting of health professionals. Two awards up to $2500 each are available. Deadline is ongoing.

  • Small Project Awards - Currently Available
    For Full and Affiliate Network members to enhance their services as well as promote NLM products and services; and provide seed money for ongoing or one-time projects through the purchase of displays, brochures, presentations, materials, equipment, supplies or presentation of small programs. Eight awards at $1000 each are available. Deadline is ongoing.

  • Exhibit Awards - Currently Available
    For members participation at venues that promote health information resources. Funds support registration and fees, travel, and related expenses. Members can promote their local library resources while promoting the National Library of Medicine. One award at $2000 is available. Deadline is ongoing.

  • MedlinePlus Go Local - Currently Available
    For members to create a "GoLocal" option that will allow users to go directly from within MedlinePlus to local health resources.

  • EFTS Award
    For current and non-EFTS DOCLINE libraries to receive funding to start an EFTS account or to sustain a resource sharing project. EFTS improves the ease and cost-effectiveness of resource sharing throughout the Middle Atlantic Region.

  • Health Literacy Awards (For NEW Projects)
    For Full and Affiliate Network members to create or develop new health literacy projects within their library or organization or by partnering with other libraries or organizations. Health literacy projects should address issues of the target population's ability to read, listen, analyze, and make decisions, and the ability to apply these skills to health situations. Three awards are at $30,000 each are available. Deadline for application is 9/2/2008

  • Health Literacy Awards (For EXISTING Projects)
    For Full and Affiliate Network members to extend or sustain existing health literacy projects within their library or organization or projects achieved by partnership with other libraries or organizations. Health literacy projects would have addressed issues of the target population's ability to read, listen, analyze, and make decisions, and the ability to apply these skills to health situations. Current projects seeking sustaining funds should address reasons for seeking the funds and sustainability post-award in the application. Two awards at $20,000 each are available. Deadline for application is 9/2/2008.

  • Planning Awards
    Accepting applications from MAR full and affiliate network members to plan or determine the feasibility for future library improvement and outreach projects. Three awards at $15,000 each are available. Deadline for application is 8/1/2008

  • Technology Awareness Conference Award
    This award is an opportunity for a partnership between an Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or Hispanic Service Institution (HSI) and a Resource Library from the Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) to host a technology awareness conference. One award at $15,000 is available. Deadline for application is 8/1/2008.

  • Library Space and Its Impact Conference Award
    The NN/LM MAR is accepting letters of interest for a one-day conference award on: Transformational Change of Library Space and Its Impact on Librarians and Library Services from NN/LM MAR full members. The applications will address the issue of library and librarian identity in light of changing or reduced physical space.

  • Technology Innovation Awards
    For Full Network members to provide access to health information using technologies in a creative manner to reach underserved or difficult to reach populations. Projects must involve training or demonstrating the use of technology to the target population.

  • Technology Improvement Awards
    For Full Network members to expand their access to health information, enhance services and provide seed funding for one-time technology projects or to bring technology to a library or community that has previously not had access to NLM products and services.

  • Outreach Conference Awards
    To fund two conferences: one on health disparities and one on health literacy. The goal of these awards are to identify regional issues in health disparities and information literacy by involving key players including staff of public and health sciences libraries, community or faith-based organizations and research institutes that can inform and educate and potentially build partnerships within the region.

  • Training Awards
    For members to support hosting a workshop, technology fair or forum, or other professional educational activity that will assist network members in developing their skills and knowledge, and enhance their abilities as participants in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM). Multiple awards to a single institution are possible.

  • Online Training Development Awards
    For members to support the development of instructional programs that improve the knowledge and skills of librarians, health care providers, and other groups. Courses are to be delivered over the web. Access to the web technology is available through MAR.

  • Online Training Awards
    For members to support online instruction that will assist network members in developing their skills and knowledge, and enhance their abilities as participants in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM).

Who is eligible?

Your institution must be an NN/LM MAR network member to apply for an award. Most awards are open to full or affiliate network members; check the individual award's web page for specific requirements.

If you are not currently a network member, you can apply for membership. Membership is free and open to libraries and community-based organizations working in health care.

RML Committees - Outreach, Technology - as well as RML staff will review the applications. Check each individual award for reviewers.
