Access to Electronic Health Information for the Public Award

2001-2002:

University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Center for Development and Disability, Albuquerque, NM:

The University of New Mexico's project seeks to ensure that New Mexicans are supported in accessing health information about disabilities and to increase their capacity to make informed health care decisions.

Express Consumer Health Outreach Award

2005-2006:

Centers for Youth and Families, Little Rock, AR:

The Parent/Caregiver Outreach Program will provide training on MedlinePlus and Household Products Database, and provide access to health, safety, and developmental information to teen parents, other parents in the community, and childcare providers.

East Baton Rouge Parish Library, Baton Rouge, LA:

The Learning for Life: Teaching Seniors about MedlinePlus and the Household Products Database project will use the East Baton Rouge Parish Library bookmobile to provide programs and training on NLM databases to area retirement centers and nursing homes.

People Living Through Cancer, Inc., Albuquerque, NM

The Enhancing Education for Empowerment Project will improve the access to online health information offered through the lending library of cancer related information for consumers, and use a wireless computer to provide direct Internet access for educational workshops, trainings for peer cancer support group facilitators, and other outreach efforts.

Los Alamos County Public Library System, Los Alamos, NM:

The project, Promoting Easy Access to Online Consumer Health Information for Los Alamos County Senior Citizens, will provide access to and instruction in the use of MedlinePlus and NIHSeniorHealth at library branches and at senior residential facilities.

Perry Carnegie Library, Perry, OK:

The project, The On-Ramp to Better Health, will offer senior citizens in the community access to and hands-on education on the use of NLM consumer health databases.

Collin County Community College District, McKinney, TX:

In the project, HIP for Collin (Health Information Program for Collin County), the Consumer Health Information Center @ Central Park Campus of Collin County Community College, in collaboration with the McKinney Memorial Public Library, will offer classes and resources to library patrons to promote health literacy.

2004-2005:

These awards are designed to foster the use of online consumer health information resources among the general public by supporting collaborative projects between community based health organizations and public libraries.

Partners for Access to Consumer Health Information Awards

This project is a partnership between a Network member and a community based clinic that will provide assistance in retrieving and disseminating consumer health information.

Outreach

Closing the Gap: Health Information Outreach to Health Professionals Serving Special Populations

2002-2003:

A collaboration with Continuum of Care to provide information and training to health professionals serving people with developmental disabilities utilizing a train-the-trainer approach at several clinics in New Mexico.

Express Outreach Award

2005-2006:

St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, Fort Smith, AR:

The Quality Medical Information for Cancer Patients and Their Families: Combining NLM Resources and Improved Technology project will improve access and usage of NLM databases for cancer survivors, families, and consumers in the greater Fort Smith, Arkansas area.

Southeastern Louisiana University, Baton Rouge, LA:

The project, A Study to Examine PDA Use by Undergraduate Nursing Students: Encouraging Future Clinicians to Access Health Information at the Point of Care, will provide instruction on PDA resources including PubMed to nursing students.

Southeastern Louisiana Area Health Education Center Learning Resource Center, Slidell, LA:

The SEL-AHEC Learning Resource Center will conduct outreach activities aimed at improving access to biomedical information by promoting NLM products and services, especially MEDLINE/PubMed and MedlinePlus to consumers and healthcare providers in 13 Southeast Louisiana parishes.

New Mexico Public Health Association, Santa Fe, NM

Beginning and advanced training sessions will be offered in Farmington, Espanola, Raton, and Portales, NM for public health professionals and community health workers on the use of the PHPartners website to access reliable health information.

2004-2005:

New Mexico Public Health Association, Santa Fe, NM:

The Health Information Training for Public Health Workers project will provide health information training and skills to public health workers and community members involved in health and related community coalitions. Training sessions will emphasize effective use of NLM databases in finding high quality public health information.

University of Texas Health Center at Tyler, Tyler, TX:

The goal of the Aiding Public Health Professionals: Promoting Health Information Online & On Target project is to enhance the ability of public health professionals in Public Health Regions 4/5 North to fulfill their mission through awareness and use of quality online health information resources. The sessions will demonstrate the Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce resource as well as other NLM Databases.

2003-2004:

Border Epidemiology and Environmental Health Center, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM:

The project, Connecting BIEN Promotion Information to Rural Communities/Colonias of South Central New Mexico Using the Promotora Model, will provide computer health information training to community health workers known as promotoras.

The project Health Information Outreach to the Chinese Population in Dallas-Fort Worth seeks to improve the abilities of the Chinese population of Dallas-Fort Worth in accessing and utilizing quality health information on the Internet.

The University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health's, Community Health Assessment Resource for Texas, seeks to provide access via the Internet to births, deaths, and census data for all census tracts in Texas.

The Library Improvement Project is a yearly award intended to assist Network members that wish to connect to the Internet and develop library services. Selected libraries receive new computer equipment and funding for Internet and document delivery services.

Partners in Public Health Information Outreach

The project, Evidence-Based Public Health (EBPH) Informatics Training for Public Health Practitioners in New Mexico, will provide EBPH informatics training for Department of Health workers serving rural and remote areas of New Mexico. It will also generate practical information about questions that practitioners formulate in the course of fulfilling their everyday responsibilities.

2003-2004:

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport, LA:

The Teaching Public Health Outreach Using a Wireless lab will use a wireless teaching lab to provide training to public health workers in 29 parishes of northeast Louisiana. Training will include PubMed, MedlinePlus and other databases.

University of North Texas Health Science Center, Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Center Library, Fort Worth, TX:

The project will increase practitioners ability to access, evaluate and search databases to retrieve information relevant to the public health field. It will also introduce Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and highlight their potential for access to immediately available information to rural public health professionals.
