Washington, D.C. - In a letter to Democratic Members, former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski reaffirmed his strong support for the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Health, and Iraq Accountability Act.
“By passing this bill, the House will send a message to the President, to the American people, and to the world, that our mistaken and unilateral policy will change,” Brzezinski wrote.

Dear Democratic Representative:
This morning, I was honored to address your caucus at Speaker Pelosi’s invitation as you prepare to consider the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act.
The war in Iraq is a war of Presidential hubris. Launched unilaterally, the war has badly damaged America’s prestige and legitimacy throughout the world. The Administration’s fundamental historic error is that the United States cannot and should not act as a colonial power in the post-colonial age, as an imperial power in the post-imperial age.
By passing this bill, the House will send a message to the President, to the American people, and to the world, that our mistaken and unilateral policy will change.
The Iraq plan approved by the House Appropriations Committee provides the leverage to hold the Iraqi government accountable by conditioning U.S. support to benchmarks already endorsed by President Bush and Iraqi leaders. This leverage is vital to the creation of a political solution to the war in Iraq, and only a political solution will end this war.
The bill the House considers this week will help change direction in Iraq and does so in an effective and responsible way. After four years of war, it is time for the Congress to assert itself.
Sincerely,
Zbigniew Brzezinski
