Washington, D.C. – Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi announced today that she has nominated the Assistant to the Speaker, the Chair of the Democratic Congressional Committee, and the Chairs of three House Committees.
- Congressman Xavier Becerra of California as Assistant to the Speaker
- Congressman Chris Van Hollen of Maryland as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee
- Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald of California as Chairwoman of the House Administration Committee
- Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio as Chairwoman of the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct
- Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney of New York as Vice Chairwoman of the Joint Economic Committee
“These appointments will expand the role of women and minorities in vital roles in the new Congress,” Pelosi said. “With the strength of our Democratic Caucus rooted in our diversity, these Members will provide a strong voice for all Americans.”
“Congressman Xavier Becerra’s keen intellect and substantive policy expertise will be crucial in charting a new course for America’s working families,” Pelosi said. “As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, he has been a strong leader in mapping out a new direction on trade, Social Security, and federal taxes. As former Chair of the Hispanic Caucus, he has proven himself a national leader on issues of importance to the Latino community and his appointment to the new Democratic Leadership will strengthen the voices of Latinos across the country.”
“Congressman Chris Van Hollen’s depth of legislative experience and political savvy will make him an exceptional DCCC Chairman,” Pelosi said. “I am confident he will build upon the success of our outstanding Chairman Rahm Emanuel and lead our efforts to strengthen our Democratic majority in the House and enable us to continue to address the priorities of all Americans.”
“Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald will be a powerful and passionate voice as Chair of the House Administration Committee for orderly operation of the House, and for federal election reform and campaign finance reform,” Pelosi said. “She is committed to a professionally managed House of Representatives, served by a diverse workforce.”
“A former judge, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones has served with distinction on the Ethics Committee for the past six years, demonstrating that she is tough and smart,” Pelosi said. “She will bring those characteristics to her new position as Chair of the Ethics Committee, where she will provide steadfast and active leadership in a non-partisan and judicious way, holding Members to the highest ethical standard.”
“Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has been an aggressive voice in ensuring that strong U.S. economic growth will benefit all American families, not just the wealthy few,” Pelosi said. “America’s middle-class families will continue to benefit from her leadership and expertise in working to bring about a New Direction that restores the American dream and provides economic security and opportunity for all.”
