Adult Literacy
(ADTED 457) is a three-credit undergraduate/graduate level Penn State
course offered online through Penn State’s World Campus. It can be used
as an elective for several Penn State graduate degree programs, as well
as for undergraduate credit.

The
course examines recent research and issues, and bridges the gap between
research and adult literacy practices. It explores best practices for
developing instruction and teaching adult students, including
contextualized instruction, scaffolding techniques to promote
independent learning, and self-regulation strategies to support
self-directed learning and for successful transition into postsecondary
education and training.

The
course has been designed to provide practitioners with a professional
development opportunity to focus on their own areas of interest within
the field of adult basic and literacy education, including, but not
limited to, family literacy, workplace literacy and workforce
development, health literacy, financial literacy, and information
literacy.

There
are no prerequisites, and a background in adult education is not
necessary for successful completion of the course. The course
curriculum allows students to participate at their own level of
experience and need.

The course begins September 3,
2008 and ends December 3, 2008.
