The training Donna mentioned has been an important part of a couple of
pilot projects we've done with adult education teachers in Kentucky and
with community-based literacy programs in other states. We've learned a
lot from these projects and have documented both teacher and learner
outcomes resulting from the training and other support provided
(including materials we developed for teachers and tutors). We worked
with programs in both urban and rural areas and have now begun another
project involving adult educators working with Native American students.

One of the areas the Kentucky teachers found most useful was our focus
on building vocabulary. I would be happy to talk to anyone interested in
our experiences and the training and resources we've developed.

Susan McShane, author of the NIFL publication Applying Research in
Reading Instruction for Adults: First Steps for Teachers, would be an
excellent resource for you. She works for the National Center for

Subject: [ProfessionalDevelopment 2140] Seeking input on available
training

Hi to all,

I work for one of the adult education resource centers in Ohio. My
center specializes in Reading & Writing. For FY09, we are going to
focus our reading PD offerings on vocabulary.

I have been researching online trainings and other resources. We have
been involved in STAR, and I am well versed in Thinkfinity courses and
the NCSALL pieces. Are there any trainings/videos/resources members of
this list would recommend?

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Jenny
