Julie-- if you have ever heard Laura Weisel present on this topic, you would know that the second process you describe is primary in the picture of why many learners never learned well in school.? I believe Laura just posted a message about presentations she is doing in the near future in your general area.. She is very knowledgeable about this subject, having investigated the role of emotions in learning for more than two decades.??

Also, if memory serves, there is a current or upcoming ProLiteracy online course on emotions and learning.?? Every teacher of adult learners who struggle with learning needs to be well versed in this? important topic.?? Robin Lovrien Schwarz

Subject: [LearningDisabilities 2033] Re: Research

I sometimes wonder if there is a chicken-and-egg factor here. Are the
psychological symptoms such as low self-esteem, depression etc a result
of low literacy and?the way?that impacts an adult in their working
life, or could certain conditions such as depression be factors which have
impacted academic learning and therefore be one of the contributing
causes of low literacy/numeracy?

?

In other words, which comes first, the learning struggles or the
depression/low self esteem?
