Research Activities

The faculty and staff at the Coast Guard Academy are actively engaged in a broad range of research topics. Examples of current faculty research include:

Methods For Improved Detection Of Accelerants In Fire Debris - Prof Glenn Frysinger and CAPT Rick Gaines recently received a $300K grant from the U. S. Department of Justice to develop new methods for the detection of petroleum-based accelerants in fire debris. The methods will be based upon a relatively new breakthrough in technology for high-resolution separation of complex mixtures known as comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography. Frysinger and Gaines have been leaders in the development of this technology for several years.

For a completed description of all research by department, as well as scholarly activities conducted by cadets, please see the CGA Annual Report, available by contacting the CAS Editor, LCDR Patrick McMillin, 860-444-8531
