ORLANDO, Fla. -- Since the first Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opened in Charlotte County on August 17, 2004, 72 centers have assisted nearly 357,000 disaster assistance applicants with damages and losses from the recent hurricanes. Presently, 42 DRCs are open throughout the state, providing applicants with needed information and services.
Thirty-nine DRCs are in fixed facilities, with 30 on the Peninsula and nine in the Panhandle. Three mobile DRCs serve small communities and rural areas, moving from one location to another on a weekly basis, giving applicants in these regions an opportunity to access the services provided by a center’s staff.
“A DRC’s continuing operation is based on the number of applicants who make use of its services. In many instances, a slight decline in daily visits is expected,” said State Coordinating Officer Craig Fugate. “However, should daily visits to a center decrease to a point where there is no longer a need to be open, the DRC will close and the staff will be moved to a location where there is a demand. We will not close a center as long as there is a need.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) continue to review DRC needs and activity on a daily basis. The goal is to insure that all who require a center’s services and information will have access to a DRC. Listings of all DRCs presently open are included below.
All centers are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (local time), Monday through Saturday, until further notice. Representatives of state, federal, and voluntary agencies, as well as loan officers from the U.S. Small Business Administration, will be on hand to answer questions and provide recovery information. Mitigation personnel can provide applicants with valuable information and advice on how to rebuild a damaged home or structure safely.
Individuals and business owners are urged to register for assistance first by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). For those who are speech- or hearing-impaired the TTY number is 18004627585. They may call daily from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight EST. After applying, those who have questions may visit a center to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists.
Floridians may also register for assistance online. Those with access to a computer should enter the FEMA website at http://www.fema.gov. Look for and click on the words “Register for Disaster Assistance Online” located at the top-right side of the page in a green box.
