Professional Development Award - Recipients
Year Three - May 2008 to April 2009
Barbara Platts, Manager, Department of Library Services, Munson Healthcare, Traverse City, MI, is the latest recipient of the Professional Development Award. She used her funds to subsidize the cost of attending 2008 Computers in Libraries.
"The conference track I am interested in attending includes 15 sessions on information search discovery, next-gen catalogs, and search engines. For 2008, the library is developing a project outline to implement a federated search engine search and retrieval system."
Year Two - May 2007 to April 2008
There were no Professional Development recipients in Year Two.
Year One - May 2006 to April 2007
Jerry DeWitt, Library Manager of the Carle Foundation Hospital Library was the first recipient of the Professional Development Award this year. He has elected to attend a knowledge management conference. When asked how he selected this topic he responded with
"... the Library inevitably works with all departments. It is felt that our library could offer insight and guidance on how to organize and share organizational knowledge. The idea is that understanding how knowledge is created and shared would allow us as an organization to anticipate and respond to changes in the internal and external environment."
Nandita S. Mani, Senior Information Resource Specialist at Henry Ford Hospital Sladen Library (HFHS) is our second recipient this year. She is planning a more traditional approach to her professional development. Her application states...
"Conducting an efficient literature search is oftentimes the hardest component for much of our clientele when pursuing research. Librarians are always available to assist with the compilation of a literature search; however, there is also a need for physicians to be more self-sufficient and proactive regarding their research pursuits. In this regard, an educational program specifically on the utilization of PubMed MEDLINE, tailored to HFHS Senior Staff and Residents, needs to be developed and incorporated into the library curriculum. Providing a tailored curriculum on PubMed MEDLINE to this target group is of utmost importance if we are to promote literature searching that is geared towards evidence-based medicine, and if we are to assist in the flourishing of scholarly communication within our organization."
Professional Development recipients have used these funds to attend Computers in Libraries, Internet Librarian and EDUCAUSE. One might also consider meetings or classes that focus on copyright, digital libraries or preservation. The GMR staff looks forward to receiving your applications.
