Online Training Awards

Announcement

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) is accepting applications members to provide online training on the databases and web sites of the National Library of Medicine, technology or accessing quality health information on the internet from MAR full and affiliate members.

Purpose

The purpose of the training award program is to improve health professionals’, librarians’ and the public’s skills in accessing electronic health information and to foster partnerships between health sciences librarians and health professionals, the public and other librarians. Library associations or consortia may apply as an organization if they have a tax identifier number.

Requirements

Full or affiliate MAR Network members are eligible to apply. The training must take place using the Adobe Connect online system, provided by the NN/LM MAR and should be at least 1 hour in length. The activity must be open to other MAR network members.

The instructional activity should be focused on enhancing the knowledge and skills of health sciences librarians and/or health information intermediaries, such as health educators and health promoters. The knowledge and skills gained should enable the participants to better manage health information services and resources; to use technologies to enhance access to health information resources; or, in general, to improve their ability to contribute to the goals of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Some examples of activities that are eligible for funding are:

  • Training health professionals, public library staffs, health sciences librarians, community-based organizations, health clinics or health consumers to search PubMed, MedlinePlus, Clinical Trials.gov, TOXNET (including LactMed, Household Products Database, ChemID Plus, Hazardous Substance Databank), ToxMystery, Toxtown, locating health services information and new or emerging technologies that can be used to access health information.

  • Training unaffiliated health professionals or groups to use PubMed, TOXNET, WISER and other NLM databases or web sites and how to establish a partnership with a library to obtain full-text articles.

  • Training unaffiliated health professionals or groups to use new technology, such as mobile technology, to access and store useful health information.

  • Training staff of organizations that provide health information to consumers, including conducting the reference interview, understanding basic medical terminology, and obtaining full text of articles not available in their collection.

  • Training groups of consumers to locate good sources of health information on the Internet.

 

Application Process

  • Complete the online award application
  • Applications accepted through March 30, 2007. Awards made until no more funds are available.
  • Application should be made at least one month in advance of the program.
  • All classes and course materials that are developed for the class are to be submitted to the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC).

The MAR staff will acknowledge your application when received and will provide notification of awards within 3 months of the application deadline. Funding is not available for indirect costs. Food, furniture and print materials cannot be more than 5% of budget.

Cost Instructions
Members can apply for up to $500 for each award.  Multiple awards are available to a single institution.

The funds may be used to support:

  • Fees of instructors and/or presenters
  • Instructional handouts
  • Mailings and other expenses related to promoting the activity

Application Review Process

Applications are reviewed by the Outreach Committee.  Questions and comments may be sent to the applicant for clarification and revision of the proposal.

Evaluation Criteria

IDENTIFICATION OF NEED
Proposal describes why the instructional activity is needed and documents how the need was identified.
30 points

ARRANGEMENTS
Planning and arrangements for the instructional activity are described in sufficient detail to predict the likelihood of success for the event. Learning objectives and evaluation strategies for measuring the learning objectives are included.
35 points

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS OF SPONSORING ORGANIZATION AND INSTRUCTORS
Documentation is provided about previous experience of the sponsoring organization to conduct instructional activities. Qualifications of the instructors and/or presenters are described sufficiently in the proposal.

Reporting Requirements

A final report, including a blog/newsletter article, must be submitted within 30 days of completion of the project. Award recipients are encouraged to take photographs for inclusion in the report and article.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy Requirement
In accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy investigators must submit or have submitted for them their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts that arise from NIH funds and are accepted for publication as of April 7, 2008 to PubMed Central, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after publication. As of May 27, 2008, investigators must include the PubMed Central reference number when citing an article in NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports that fall under the policy, and was authored or co-authored by the investigator or arose from the investigator’s NIH award.
