Call for Applications
Professional Development Award

The NN/LM SCR is accepting applications for the Professional Development Award. The purpose of this award is to enable individuals at NN/LM SCR Network member institutions to expand professional knowledge and experience to provide improved health information access to health care professionals and consumers.

Eligibility

Individuals who live within the NN/LM South Central Region (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and are affiliated with an NN/LM SCR Network member institution. Network membership is free and open to institutions interested in providing health information. To apply for membership see: http://nnlm.gov/scr/services/member.html.

Potential Professional Development Opportunities

Funding will be provided to individuals interested in attending professional seminars, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities in areas of health science librarianship or related disciplines. Potential opportunities could be in the following areas (these are examples only and not meant to be all-inclusive):

  • A medical informatics continuing education course;
  • A seminar on a technology topic of interest to health science librarianship;
  • A professional conference on library advocacy;
  • A leadership course for librarians interested in moving into library administration.

Funding

Nine (9) awards of up to $1,000 each are available.

Budget Guidelines

This award is intended to cover the costs of professional development courses such as registration fees and travel expenses (airfare, hotel, per diem, etc.).

Period of Performance

Up to 12 months from date of the award. Awardees must attend the course during this period of time.

Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be scored against the following criteria:

  • Appropriateness of course/conference to areas of health science librarianship and health information access
  • Applicant's expertise in subject area and/or interest in this area

First-time applicants will receive special consideration. Preference will be given to applicants interested in attending National Training Center and Clearinghouse and NN/LM SCR course offerings made available in the Region.

Deliverables

One (1) report will be required at the completion of the course. This report should include information about the professional development experience, including a summary of the course and its application to the career objectives of the awardee.

In addition to the aforementioned reporting requirements, the awardee shall provide copies of all communications, materials produced, press releases, advertisements, and articles for newsletters related to the award. In accepting the award, the awardee gives permission for use of such materials by the National Library of Medicine and NN/LM.

Publication and Publicity

The awardee shall acknowledge the support of the National Library of Medicine whenever publicizing the work under this contract in any media by including an acknowledgment substantially as follows:

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy Requirement

In accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-033.html) investigators must submit or have submitted for them their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts that arise from NIH funds and are accepted for publication as of April 7, 2008 to PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/), to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after publication. As of May 27, 2008, investigators must include the PubMed Central reference number when citing an article in NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports that fall under the policy, and was authored or co-authored by the investigator or arose from the investigator’s NIH award.  For more information, see the Public Access web page at: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/.
