ATTORNEY GENERAL RENO AND SECRETARY SHALALA WILL CALL FOR

REAUTHORIZATION OF VAWA AT LOCAL VISIT TO MARY'S CENTER


WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General Janet Reno and Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna E. Shalala will visit Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care in Washington on Monday, October 2, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. The Attorney General and the Secretary will call for action on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

At Monday's event, the Attorney General will also announce a grant to Ayuda. Ayuda, founded in 1971, has become the District's leading source of low-cost legal assistance for immigrants in the areas of domestic violence, child support, domestic relations and immigration matters. Ayuda's domestic violence program, Clinica Legal Latina, which began in 1986, often works with Mary's Center to provide comprehensive service to clients. Mary's Center was established in 1988 with joint funding from the D.C. Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs, and the D.C. Commission of Public Health, to address the demand for Spanish-speaking maternal and pediatric services in Ward One.
