DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER TO PARTICIPATE
IN PROJECT EXILE ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
WASHINGTON, DC - Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder will visit Richmond, Virginia on Friday, September 29, 2000 to participate in a roundtable discussion on Project Exile, Richmond's version of the Department of Justice's gun violence reduction initiative. Following the discussion, the Deputy will join Mayor Tim Kaine, Police Chief Jerry Oliver, U.S. Attorney Helen Fahey and members of the community for a walking tour of the Blackwell neighborhood of Richmond.
The implementation of Project Exile in Richmond in 1997 was an effort by the Justice Department to assist the city in reducing its homicide rate. The Justice Department committed FBI and DEA agents, U.S. Marshals as well as federal prosecutorial resources to the city. Working collaboratively with the Mayor's office, the Police department and the community, Project Exile helped reduce the homicide rate by nearly 50% between 1997 and 1999.
