MCC Board Selects Philippines as Compact Eligible
On March 11, the Millennium Challenge Corporation Board of Directors announced that the Philippines has been selected as eligible to apply for an MCC compact. The Board noted the Philippines' consistent performance on eligibility criteria and its effective implementation of the MCC-funded Threshold Program focused on helping curb corruption through improved tax and customs administration and strengthening of their Ombudsman's office.

Kyrgyz Republic Launches $16 million Millennium Challenge Threshold Program to Improve the Rule of Law
On March 14, the United States and the Kyrgyz Republic signed a two-year, $16 million MCC threshold program agreement at the White House in Bishkek. The program seeks to increase the independence and effectiveness of the judicial system, develop a more functional and trusted police force, improve the government’s capacity to investigate and prosecute corruption cases, educate the public and media on the dangers of corruption and strengthen the financial disclosure system.

Niger Launches $23 Million Millennium Challenge Threshold Program to Promote Girls’ Education, Combat Corruption, Reduce Red Tape
On March 17, Nigerien Prime Minister Seini Oumarou and Millennium Challenge Corporation Deputy CEO Rodney Bent officiated at the signing of a three-year, $23 million threshold program. The program focuses on bolstering girls’ education, reducing public corruption, streamlining business creation procedures and improving rights and access to land.

On March 26, MCC hosted a public forum with a distinguished panel exploring the links between press freedom, economic growth and poverty reduction in anticipation of World Press Freedom Day.
