Burkina Faso and MCC Sign Poverty Reduction Grant to Improve Agriculture, Roads, Girls’ Education and Land Use
On July 14, in a signing ceremony at the State Department’s Benjamin Franklin room, MCC CEO Ambassador John Danilovich, and Burkina Faso’s Minister of Finance, Jean Baptiste Marie Pascal Compaoré, signed a $480.9 million poverty reduction grant. The five-year agreement will help the landlocked West African nation reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth through strategic investments in improved agricultural productivity, land tenure security and land management, farm-to-market roads and girls’ primary education.

Senate Committee’s Proposed Funding Level for MCC Sends Mixed Signals about America’s Commitment to Poverty Reduction
On July 17, MCC CEO Ambassador John Danilovich responded to the Senate Appropriations Committee’s proposed State and Foreign Operations funding bill for fiscal year 2009. Under the proposed bill, MCC would not be able to enter into any new agreements with countries working to reduce poverty for at least one year.

Namibia and MCC Sign $304.5 Million Poverty Reduction Grant to Support Education and Training, Increase Rural Incomes
On July 28, at a signing ceremony in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Honorable Professor Peter Katjavivi, Director General of the Namibian National Planning Commission (NPC) and Mr. Rodney Bent, MCC Deputy CEO signed a $304.5 million poverty reduction grant. The five-year grant will help strengthen access to and quality of Namibia’s education and training sector, increase productivity of farm enterprises in communal rural areas and promote growth in Namibia’s tourism industry.
