Jordan Presses Case for Flood Relief to President

Washington, DC -- Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) today welcomed the State of Ohio’s formal request for federal disaster assistance in the wake of severe flooding in north central and northwestern Ohio, and again voiced his support for such assistance in a letter to President Bush, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director R. David Paulison.

“Having surveyed the damaged areas and spoken extensively with affected residents, it’s clear to me that federal resources are needed,” Jordan said.  “Based on my conversations with Secretary Chertoff and Director Paulison, I anticipate quick action on a federal declaration that will make aid available to residents and small businesses in our district.”

The text of Jordan’s letter follows.

Dear Mr. President:

I write today in support of the emergency declaration request for the State of Ohio submitted by Governor Strickland in response to the damage caused by severe storms and extensive flooding across the state.

I appreciated the opportunity to speak with and tour flood-damaged areas with Secretary Chertoff and Director Paulison on Thursday, August 23.  Per our conversations and after their review of the situation, they agreed with me that expedited federal assistance was in order.

The State of Ohio’s initial request for assistance applies to six of the 18 affected counties, of which ten had made local and/or state declarations.  I represent all or part of five of the affected counties, of which four are included in the Governor’s initial request for assistance.

My staff and I have been in contact with local and state EMA officials throughout the crisis.  I have personally visited the affected areas to gain a firsthand account of the damage.

I can report to you that citizens, businesses, and infrastructure in the affected counties have experienced catastrophic losses, and state and local government resources have been severely challenged as a result of these floods.

Your quick and favorable consideration of this emergency declaration would be a welcome announcement in helping mitigate further damage and beginning the recovery process.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.  Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Congressman Jim Jordan

Fourth District, Ohio
