Jordan Announces Federal Grants for Two Richland County Fire Departments

Washington, DC -- Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) announced today that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved grants for the Mansfield Fire Department and the Worthington Township Fire Department (Butler).

"This is a quarter-million dollars that will be coming to Richland County to help our firefighters," Jordan said.  "I'm pleased that the county continues to benefit from this vital DHS program."

Mansfield is being awarded $174,639 for the purchase of portable radios, antennas, and related equipment.  Also included in the announcement is funding for emergency power generators for each of Mansfield's five fire stations.

Worthington Township will receive $75,691 in operations and safety funding.

The funding is made available through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program, funded at $550 million in the current award round.  Roughly 18,000 career and volunteer fire departments applied for funding this year, submitting requests totaling more than $2.3 billion.

This is Worthington Township's first AFG Program award.  Mansfield received AFG funding in 2004 and 2005; the 2005 award of $472,000 for a new ladder/pumper for Mansfield's fleet remains the largest grant awarded to date in Ohio's Fourth Congressional District.

Since the program's inception in 2001, more than $9.1 million has been awarded to fire departments in the Fourth District--nearly $1.2 million to Richland County departments alone.
