Important Species and Habitats Monitoring Program
Numerous plants and
animals occur on the NTS which are
considered important because they are protected or managed and/or they
are sensitive.
Protected or Managed Species:
- Protected by state or federal laws and regulations
- Managed as game or furbearers by the State of Nevada
Sensitive Species:
- Their populations are distributed over a very small area or
region
- The numbers of known populations are low
- Their abundance within known populations is low
- Their populations or habitat are susceptible to harm from activities
similar to those on the NTS
The goals of the Important Species and Habitat Monitoring Program are
to:
- Ensure that NTS projects do not threaten the continued existence
of protected and sensitive species, the important resources these species
rely upon, and any unique or protected habitats on the NTS
- Ensure that all NTS projects adhere to state and federal
regulations aimed at protecting important species and resources
including wild horses, migratory birds, wetlands, and wildlife
habitat
- Gather sufficient information on sensitive species’ distribution
and abundance on the NTS to determine their status and to assess if
further protection or management under state or federal law is
necessary
