Southern Pine Beetle Hazard Maps v1.0
SPB theme art Introduction

Southern Pine Beetle is one of the most destructive insects in the southern United States. Although southern pine beetle outbreaks have recently declined, significant outbreaks are expected in the next few years as drought and other environmental stresses continue to weaken host species across the South. Preferred hosts are shortleaf, loblolly, Virginia, and pitch pines.

To help identify areas in the future with potential for experiencing significant southern pine beetle activity a hazard map was developed for Region 8 of the Forest Service.

How are the Southern Pine Beetle Hazard Maps going to be used?

The SPB Prevention and Restoration Program (download the 484 KB PDF file here), along with the local and regional resource managers, will be using these maps in planning activities and also to prioritize where prevention and restoration treatments should occur on the landscape to get the most cost-effective treatments.

Note: models were only run in areas with modeled SPB host and within the ecological zones depicted on the regional map at the bottom of this page. For more information on models and host species please click the model links also at the bottom of this page.

The Region 8 SPB Hazard map is a compilation of 8 models run across 15 broad ecological zones, where SPB Hazard is defined as: The degree of vulnerability of a stand to SPB, based on stand and physiographic attributes.
In several models, SPB establishment was considered a precursor to SPB hazard; here, separate susceptibility and vulnerability models were constructed. Models were developed from variations of existing SPB hazard rating systems developed for the coastal plain, piedmont, and mountains:

Each model is constructed at a 30-meter resolution within a GIS environment using a set of forest parameter layers (Basal Area, Diameter, Stand Density Index etc.) and a multi-criteria modeling framework.

Host Mapping Methods Paper (1 MB PDF)

The multi-criteria framework used on this project was developed during the construction of the 2006 National Insect and Disease Risk map (NIDRM).

NIDRM Methods Paper (1.5 MB PDF)

All model outputs were reviewed by local subject area experts and in some cases adjustments were made. In several regions field work was conducted to assess the "usefulness" of both the hazard and forest parameter maps.
