Downloading, viewing, and printing PDF files

Downloading PDFs*
With most common modern web browsers, Adobe PDF files will open automatically within the browser window or separate Adobe Reader application. Documents and links on this website marked with this PDF icon (PDF icon) indicate documents which are in Adobe PDF format is followed with the file size in [brackets] or indicated in the File Size column.

To print a PDF file choose from one of the following options:

  1. From the Adobe Reader application, select Print from the File menu

  2. From the Web browser window, click the Printer icon on the toolbar.

*Note: PDF files on this website are compatible with Acrobat version 6.0 and later. You may have an earlier version (3, 4, or 5). Please upgrade Acrobat Reader to version 6. Should you experience PDF files appearing as a blank window within Internet Explorer after downloading and are using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5.0 or earlier, please upgrade to a later version.

PDF is used because it maintains the original look and feel of large documents, and allows us to place more publications on the web in a quick and efficient manner. Further, PDF products are independent of platforms, applications, and distribution media.

Portable Document Format (PDF) is the de facto standard for the secure and reliable distribution and exchange of electronic documents and forms around the world. PDF is a universal file format that preserves the fonts, images, graphics, and layout of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it. Adobe PDF files are compact and complete, and can be shared, viewed, and printed by anyone with free Adobe Reader software.

Viewing PDFs
A whole page of text can be read by pressing simultaneously the <Ctrl> key and the <L> key. This will remove the toolbar from the screen and permits the display of individual pages. To move up and down the document page by page, use the <PgUp> or <PgDn> keys. You must escape from this mode (by pressing the <Esc> key) in order to perform any function available from the toolbar (e.g., Print, Go to Previous View).

Table numbers, figure numbers, or sections shown in blue within the text of some documents indicate that the reader can skip directly to these tables, figures, or sections by clicking on the blue text. To return to your previous view, right-click with your mouse anywhere on the page and select "Go to Previous View".

Printing PDFs
The document can be printed (all pages, the current page, or a selected range of pages) by selecting the [File] option from the toolbar at the top of the screen, then selecting the [Print] option from the pulldown file menu. This will activate a print menu. You can then select the printer, print range, and other printer settings. A color printer is required to print pages in color. The document assumes that the page is oriented in the "Portrait" mode as opposed to the "Landscape" mode. Changes in page orientation can be made through [Page Setup] under the [File] option.

How to obtain a PDF Reader
Versions of Acrobat Reader exist for all major computer platforms, including Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 98, Macintosh, Sun, UNIX and several other operating systems.

Please follow the instructions on the Adobe Acrobat download page to install the Acrobat Reader. This reader is free of charge.

Increasing page text size

Internet Explorer 5+
In the menu at the top of your browser window labeled 'View' there is an item labeled 'Text Size', which opens a sub-menu. This sub-menu should have the items 'Largest', 'Larger', 'Medium', 'Smaller', and 'Smallest'. One of these items should be marked; this is your current font size. Selecting a higher font size will make the letters on the website larger (and possibly easier to read), while a lower font size will make the letters smaller, letting you see more of the web page at once.

Netscape 6+ or Mozilla
In the menu at the top of your browser window labeled 'View' there is an item labeled 'Text Zoom' with a percentage in parentheses. When you select this item a sub-menu will open which gives you a number of self-explanatory options for changing your font size. Alternately, you can hold down the keyboard key labeled 'Ctrl' and press the keys '+' or '-' to increase or decrease your font size, respectively. Increasing your font size will make the text on the webpage larger (and possibly easier to read), while decreasing your font size will make the text smaller, enabling you to see more of the webpage without scrolling.

Netscape Navigator 4.x
In the menu at the top of your browser window labeled 'View' there are two items labeled 'Increase Font' and 'Decrease Font'. Selecting 'Increase Font' will make the letters on the web-page larger (and possibly easier to read). Selecting 'Decrease Font' will make the letters smaller, allowing you to view more of the website in one window. Alternately, you can hold down the keyboard key labeled 'Ctrl' and then press ']' to increase the font size or '[' to decrease the font size.
