Thank you for visiting the Arizona Commission of Indian Affairs website. Since 1953 our agency has been committed to strengthening the relationship between Arizona's tribes and urban Indian communties and state government.

ACIA Structure

The Commission consists of 17 members, including seven Indian Tribes and two non-Indian Members appointed by the Governor, and eight ex-officio members who serve by virtue of their office.  Arizona Revised Statutes require that the Commission hold one meeting each quarter; however the Board Chairman may call additional meetings as necessary.

The Governor appoints the Executive Director, who administers the agency.  ACIA is currently bugeted for three full-time employees: the Executive Director, the Program Specialist and the Administrative Assistant.

ACIA Activities

ACIA engages in a number of activities to fullfill its mission.  On any given day, ACIA staffers may direct prospective tourists to the appropriate cultural or visitor's center; answer questions for information on tribes or tribal lands; work with other agencies to facilitate meetings with tribal officials; update the Web page; prepare for workshops or presentations; and, during the legislative session, provide techinal assistance to community members with bill tracking, prepare fact sheets on bills and post new information on bills that may affect tribes.

Throughout the year we host several events including:

  • Arizona Indian Nations and Tribes Legislation Day
  • Arizona Indian Town Hall
  • Legislative Planning Sessions

Please check the News and Events section to find out the latest information.

Every two years we also publish the Arizona Tribal/Urban Indian Community Resource Directory deemed by many as the definitive directory for Indian country in Arizona. You can order your copy in the ACIA publications section.

Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have comments, need additional information or would like to be included on our email distribution list. Email can be sent to Lorie Wells at lorie.wells@azcia.gov
