Abraham Lincoln Capitol Airport Springfield, IL (SPI) Runway Safety Bulletin
This posting will be removed on March 31, 2009
Since Since October 1, 2006, there have been sixteen (16) surface incidents at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI).  Fifteen (15) events were classified as runway incursions.  Nine (9) incursions resulted from pilot deviations.  Five (5) pilot deviations involved pilots crossing runway hold short lines without authorization.

Five (5) pilots failed to comply with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions to hold short of runways.

Warning:  Pilots taxiing aircraft must use caution due to numerous taxiway and runway intersections in close proximity.  Watch for runway holding position markings and signs, and taxiway location signs to help maintain situational awareness.  If in doubt… ASK!

Note:  Please see the SPI Airport Diagram by clicking on the link below.

Three (3) incidents involved landing aircraft that turned onto a runway instead of the assigned taxiway.

Warning:  Pilots of landing aircraft must use caution not to exit onto an intersecting runway.  Three runways intersect at midfield.  Watch for runway exit signs that identify intersecting exit taxiways to help maintain situational awareness.  If in doubt… ASK!
