An Affiliate Member is any library, information/resource center or organization that is called on for health information by its users. An Affiliate Member might form a cooperative relationship with a Full Member, for reference assistance or document delivery.

The Network provides opportunities for professional development by offering training workshops that teach needed techniques for searching the National Library of Medicine's databases. All workshops are free and can be focused for the needs of health professionals, librarians or consumers.

Members can use the Member Lending Library to borrow professional material for a self-directed approach to continuing education. The GMR staff maintains a collection of books, audiotapes and videos focused on librarianship in consumer health and the health sciences.

The GMR offers network members opportunities to apply for funding for their libraries. Funds obtained through the GMR are used to expand the services of network libraries. You can find a detailed list of the available funding opportunities on the GMR website.

In joining the Network, each member must:

  • Designate a local contact person
  • Agree to be listed in our directory
  • Provide basic information on collections and services

Information of Interest to Public Librarians

Librarians are increasingly seeking multilingual online health resources to serve their diverse population of patrons. You can respond to this demand with the assistance of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine's Consumer Health Coordinators. Take a look at the recently updated Other Language Resources web site. The Other Language Resources contains resources with items in multiple languages.

The Other Language Resources web site provides links to useful health information, including the University of Utah -- Health Education Brochures in Multiple Languages. It is organized by specific languages and glossaries by languages.

MedlinePlus.gov is quality health care information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. MedlinePlus is for anyone with a medical question. Recommend this site to your patrons.

Public Libraries and Community Partners: Working Together to Provide Health Information is a guide to encourage health information partnerships between public libraries, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, and local health or community-based organizations.
