Tufts Environmental Health Program

Tufts' Environmental Health program is an interdisciplinary program based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the College of Engineering. Historically, professional programs in environmental health were established in schools of engineering to promote research on control of infectious disease, purification of water supplies, and sanitary disposal of human wastes. Today, focal points of concern have been broadened to such challenging issues as environmental pollution, epidemiological aspects of chronic illnesses, occupational health, risk assessment and management.

Our primary mission is to increase scientific understanding of health risks posed by contaminants in the workplace, home, and the ambient environment. Our department administers an Environmental Health Sciences Center that is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Graduate students work for the Ph.D.degree in toxicology, receiving stipends subsidized by an NIEHS training grant. Through its Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the department supervises two industrial medicine and publichealth programs devoted to community service--Strong Occupational and Environmental Medicine Services and Finger Lakes Occupational and Environmental Health Services.

South Texas Environmental Education And Research Center (STEER)

Laredo is the site of a teaching program about environmental health issues along the U.S.-Mexico border. The university-level elective course lasts four weeks and is designed for medical and dental residents and students, and nursing and public health students. The sponsor is the South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) Center, a part of the University of Texas health Science Center at San Antonio.
