Data Protection and Privacy Policy

Purchasers of Census Bureau Products

Any information that we collect for the purpose of purchasing census products may be subject to disclosure, but will be handled in accordance with the requirements of the Privacy Act and the Freedom of Information Act to ensure the greatest protection of personal privacy in the face of any required disclosure.

The Privacy Act Statement for records subject to the Privacy Act, which is about 10 percent of the records, is provided below.

The Census Bureau does not capture credit card numbers on our servers. Credit card, debit card, and check transactions are processed through to the U.S. Government's PAY.GOV system.

PAY.GOV retains the following information on its server: Customer name, address information, and information needed to process the credit card, debit card, or check transaction. The Census Bureau collects customer information (name, address, phone number, and email address) to process orders for data products. Any information that would permit identification of individual customers is used only for this purpose and not shared with other agencies or organizations, or with other areas in the Census Bureau.

Information on business or organization customers is used only for this purpose and not shared with other agencies or organizations, or with other areas in the Census Bureau, but is subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. If you choose not to enter your email address, you cannot complete your order online. However, you can call our Customer Services Center at (301) 763-4636 and place an order without providing an email address.
