Driven to Extremes: Health Effects of Climate Change Driven to Extremes: Health Effects of Climate Change

John Tibbetts

Abstract

The latest assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change avers that more intense weather events resulting from climate change are highly likely to continue occurring. How will this affect human health? Cases of water- and vector-borne diseases will probably rise, as will cases of marine diseases. More people will have less water. Heat waves will threaten more people, especially in urban centers. Allergen exposures may increase. Higher sea levels will erode beaches and flood areas where most of the world’s largest cities are located. Changes in energy generation are one way to mitigate the environmental and human health problems associated with climate change.
