On Closer Inspection: Learning to Look at the Whole Home Environment On Closer Inspection: Learning to Look at the Whole Home Environment

Angela Spivey

Abstract

A variety of health professionals and inspectors may enter a home for one reason or other, but few are equipped to spot all the possible ways a house can hurt its occupants. Now a new nationwide interdisciplinary training program is taking on the challenge of instructing frontline workers about the importance of looking at the whole home environment to help residents have a healthier place to live. This movement trains frontline workers to think beyond the boundaries of their own expertise in order to spot known hazards, then refer residents to specialists who can help them address identified problems. The network also offers an electronic database of research information, assessment tools, and treatment protocols to help workers do their jobs more effectively.
