Environmental Health Perspectives Toxicogenomics November 2003 Now that the human genome has been sequenced, the next major genomic endeavor involves trying to identify, characterize, and understand the so-called proteome--the vast complement of proteins encoded by the genome, and the network of highways, byways, and pathways they form in the course of carrying out cellular functions. The Focus (p. A816) describes the field of proteomics and the contributions it is making to our understanding of how life works.
