On the Cover | For more than 30 years, scientists have been searching for indicators of the effects of environmental exposures deep inside the body in tissues and cells. Although biomarkers identified to date have yielded important information about how pollutants alter biological systems, leading to disease, researchers are ready to go deeper still. The science of biomarkers is poised to make the next big leap in understanding with new tools in the pipeline to provide the closest look yet at the interactions between our bodies and our environment.
