Introduction

Missouri, often refered to as the Gateway to the West, is the 21st largest state in the union with 69,704 square miles, with its capital located in Jefferson City. The state of Missouri was named for the local Sioux Indian tribe, whose name translates to "the wooden canoe people." According to the last census, 5,754,618 people call the state of Missouri home, with about 84% White/Caucasian, 11.27% African American, and 2.1% Hispanic. Tthe states population is mainly split between its two largest cities -- St Louis, located on its eastern border, and the Kansas City Metro Area, located on its western border.

The Assessment and Evaluation and the Network Liaisons of the MidContinental Region are located in Missouri. The Liaisons aim to provide health information instructional assistance and resources for health professionals, consumers and Network members in the region.

Health Resources

Jefferson County, Misouri Health Department -- The Jefferson County Health Department's mission is to protect the health of the public by preventing the occurence and spread of diseases and to promote healthy practices and lifestyles. The department works closely with local agencies and healthcare professionals to assure that basic environmental health standards are met and health services are available to all persons in the county.

Missouri Cancer Care -- Since 1990, Missouri Cancer Care has allowed residents of St. Charles and surrounding communities to receive the cancer treatment they need, closer to their homes.

Missouri Health Care Links -- Missouri Health Care Links is a megasite with links to state health agencies, state associations, medical libraries and other links of interest.

Missouri Health Resources--Mississippi County Health Department-- Mississippi County Health Department provides links to local health department resources as well as to state health agencies and some national health programs.

Missouri Hospital Association -- The Missouri Hospital Association believes that hospitals and health care systems that fulfill their missions, improve the health of their communities and are valued throughout Missouri and the nation. The association works to create an environment that enables member hospitals and health care systems to improve the health of their patients and communities.

Missouri Primary Care Association -- The MPCA is a non-profit corporation founded in 1984 as an alliance of community and migrant health centers. The Association functions as an advocacy voice for the medically indigent and explores and implements activities aimed at promoting and providing high quality, accessible and personalized health care services to rural and urban populations; regardless of ability to pay; in the state of Missouri.

Missouri State Resources -- This is a list of state officials, state agencies and other national organizations that can direct consumers to resources within their communities, particularly those dealing with disabilities.

Missouri Woman's Cancer Collaboration Program -- The Missouri collaboration has developed a pilot curriculum, evaluation, and training aimed to increase breast and cervical cancer screening in rarely and never-screened women in seven Missouri counties.

Oral Health Network of Missouri -- The OHNM is a statewide oral health care network whose members provide oral care to medically underserved, uninsured and insured populations at over 24 delivery sites within Missouri's rural and urban communities. The OHNM is a non-profit tax exempt organization that received Bureau of Primary Health Care Integrated Services Development Initiative (ISDI) funding. The purpose of the Network is to integrate dental clinical and administrative functions at Safety Net Dental Clinics in Missouri to increase their capacity to provide care to underserved patients.

Community Health

Missouri Department of Medical Services -- The Department of Medical Services is responsible for monitoring health care services for low income and vulnerable citizens of Missouri. The agency oversees quality assurance for health care, sets standards of health care and finally provides education for providers and consumers alike.

Missouri Department of Mental Health -- The Department of Mental Health is responsible for overseeing with the prevention, treatment, and education about mental health, developmental disorders, and substance abuse, in the state of Missouri. The sites links consumers to wide range of information, such as treatment centers, educational materials for both providers and consumers, and links to its their subdivisions -- Children's Services, Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, Alcohol and Drug Abuse and finally Comprehensive Psychiatric Services.

Missouri Families.Org -- The website, administered by the University of Missouri and Lincoln University, provides Missouri families with lots of general information concerning finances, health, nutrition, and housing. Of particular interest are the sections on Aging, Developmental Disabilities, Health and Coping with Disasters. These sections contain FAQs, and links to general topics and educational resources about each topic area.

University of Missouri Kansas City Patient Education -- this site is essentially a tip sheet for consumer health provided the University of Missouri, Kansas City. It contains a bibliography of basic print and online resources available to the general public. It also contains links to reliable Internet resources about Patient Education and provides tips on how to conduct database searches concerning consumer health.

Rural Health

Missouri Department on Health and Senior Services--Primary Care and Rural Health -- The mission of Primary Care and Rural Health is to help communities provide access to all necessary health care services to all their residents. These services are best delivered through community-based systems of care managed and staffed by people from the community.

Missouri Rural Health Association -- Missouri Rural Health Association provides links to health resources in Missouri including the MRHA White Papers on Health Care in Rural Missouri.

Northeast Missouri Rural Health Network-- The Network is committed to coordinating and improving the access of quality basic health care services to all residents, with a special emphasis on impacting populations such as the medically underserved, uninsured and underinsured. The NMRHN has grown to 43 member agencies consisting of five rural hospitals, ten county health departments, ten ambulance districts, an air ambulance service, two medical education agencies, four mental health providers, a federally qualified health center, four nursing homes, hospice, pregnancy resource center, domestic violence center, home health agency, medical clinic and association for handicapped citizens.>

Missouri's Health Insurance Program for Children MC+ for Kids -- Missouri Department of Social Services presents information on MC+ for Kids including contact information and frequently asked questions.

Missouri Teen-Aid -- Teen-Aid, Inc provides links to Missouri State Statistics and State Legal Issues on child and maternal health, sexual activity, and the State Office for Family Research Council.

Language Access Metro Project(LAMP) The Language Access Metro Project (LAMP) is a non-profit organization and a proactive community collaborative addressing issues of healthcare access for immigrants and refugees in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

Paula J. Carter Center on Minority Health and Aging -- Lincoln University Cooperative Extension/Paula J. Carter Center on Minority Health and Aging was developed to provide leadership in the health, social, and psychological needs of Missouri's minority, disabled individuals, and elderly populations.

MCR Project Information

Network Project

The goal of the Network Membership project is to provide support for Full and Affiliate Members through DOCLINE, trainings, communications, promotional materials, collaborations, etc, while extending membership to qualified institutions not yet affiliated with the NN/LM. Additionally, the project works to provide services that members value, such as the MCR Regional Buying Consortium.

Assessment and Evaluation Project

The Assessment and Evaluation Liaison works with all members of the RML to carry out programs that contribute to the goals of the RML - improved access the health information for health professionals and consumers in the six state region. The A&E liaison designs tools to collect information about the state of health information access in the Region, barriers to access, and needs of information professionals supporting access to health information. The liaison analyzes data collected, articulates the issues identified and assists liaisons in designing programs to overcome barriers, meet needs and educate users in locating and using health information. The liaison plans and carries out evaluations of the programs that inform the RML staff and the NN/LM about the effectiveness of regional programs in meeting its stated goals.
