JONES COSPONSORS RESOLUTION TO PROTECT SYMBOLS AND TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS

“True tolerance would not discourage Americans from expressing their faith through the celebration of Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ.”

Washington, D.C. - Third District Representative Walter B. Jones is an original cosponsor of H. Res. 579, a resolution introduced by Representative Jo Ann Davis of Virginia expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.

H. Res. 579 is a response to recent suggestions that references to the Christmas holiday and its traditions be replaced with generic and secular references to a “holiday” or “winter” season instead.

“It is a sad day for America when individuals are discouraged from acknowledging Christmas and the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ,” Jones said. “We should not allow attempts at political correctness to shut out any recognition of the religious significance of this season of the year.”

“Christmas is a national holiday in our country. Those who wish to express their faith with reference to the Christmas season and its traditions should have the same freedom as those who wish to make reference to a ‘holiday’ season,” Jones said. “Let us all be free to celebrate the spirit of the season as we see fit.”

H. Res. 579 makes clear that the House of Representatives recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas and strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas. It also expresses the support of the House of Representatives for the use of these symbols and traditions.
