HOUSE PASSES BILL TO NAME BELHAVEN POST OFFICE AFTER FLOYD LUPTON

“If anybody wanted to know the definition of public service, all they would have to know is Floyd Lupton.”

WASHINGTON, DC: Last night the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2326—legislation introduced by Third District Representative Walter B. Jones to name the new Belhaven post office in honor of Floyd Lupton, a dedicated public servant who was chief of staff and friend to the senior Congressman Jones for over twenty-six years. H.R. 2326 passed by a 370-0 vote.

“If anybody wanted to know the definition of public service, all they would have to know is Floyd Lupton because he exemplified exactly what a public servant is,” Jones said. “Never, not one time, did he seek anything for himself. His only concern was the people of the 1st District of North Carolina.”

Mr. Lupton served on the staff of Congressman Jones, Sr. from 1966 until his final year in office in 1992. He passed away May 10th of this year in Belhaven, NC. Congressman Jones was one of the speakers who memorialized Lupton’s life at his funeral services.

Representative John J. Duncan, Jr. of Tennessee joined Congressman Jones in encouraging the passage of the bill. “One of the most difficult jobs in this Nation is to work on a congressional staff, and Mr. Lupton did it with great honor for twenty-six years. He took very seriously his responsibility working in the people’s House and greatly valued all opportunities to help his friends and neighbors throughout his years of public service,” Duncan said.

Representative Henry A. Waxman of California urged the swift passage of the bill and described Floyd Lupton as “a man who, through his service and his availability and his commitment to the public good, is well deserving of the tribute that we are bestowing upon him by naming this facility after him.”

Congressman Jones spoke on May 31st at the Grand Opening of the Belhaven Post Office, located at 614 West Old County Road.
