January 16, 2009

Wildland fire activity remains light throughout the states. Eight large fires were reported and seven were contained. Two large fires remain active: one each in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Weather: Dry weather conditions with gusty winds and low humidity are predicted for eastern New Mexico, western and central Texas, and western Oklahoma. Low humidity and gusty winds are expected in the southeastern states. Low humidity will return to Florida and Georgia. Southern California is forecasted to have warm, dry, and windy conditions this weekend.

NEW Middle Mountain (Oklahoma Department of Forestry): 2,800 acres at 68 percent contained. The fire is 26 miles southeast of McAlester. Firefighters expect to contain the fire on January 16.
NEW Spavinaw Hills (Oklahoma Department of Forestry): The fire was contained at 650 acres.
NEW Turkey Pen (Okmulgee Field Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs): The fire was contained at 500 acres.
NEW Powell (Oklahoma Department of Forestry): The fire was contained at 500 acres.
NEW Stony Point (Oklahoma Department of Forestry): The fire was contained at 150 acres.
