Definitions:

Deaths is the number of deaths occurring within the resident population of an area during the period as reported by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

Infant deaths is the number of deaths of infants aged under 1 year occurring within the resident population of an area during the period as reported by the NCHS.

Scope and Methodology:

The National Vital Statistics System, the Federal compilation of vital statistics data, is the result of the cooperation between the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the States to provide access to statistical information from death certificates. The data in this access tool is based on information from all death certificates filed in the 50 States and the District of Columbia. Physicians, medical examiners, and coroners report cause of death.

Practically all deaths are registered. It is believed that more than 99 percent of deaths occurring in this country are registered as required by State laws.

Death statistics are limited to events occurring during the year. The data shown here are by place of residence and exclude events occurring to nonresidents of the United States. Deaths that occur outside the United States are excluded from the data system.
