There are several programs available for students who wish to intern at SAMHSA:

HHS Emerging Leaders enter HHS on a two year appointment and upon successful completion of their program, may be converted to a permanent status.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program is the largest Hispanic internship program in the nation. The program permits students the opportunity to enhance their career experiences through their participation in SAMHSA and many other agencies.

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education(NAFEO)  offers internship assignments at SAMHSA and other government agencies for students enrolled in historically and predominantly black colleges and universities.

The Washington Internships for Native Students (WINS)  program offers students of sovereign American Indian and Alaska Native nations internship opportunities at SAMHSA and other Federal agencies.

The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)  provides work experience for students directly related to their educational pursuits in college.

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program  is a government-wide internship program for graduate students.  It leads to permanent appointment in the Federal service.  SAMHSA PMFs are appointed at the GS-9 level and receive intensive training in SAMHSA programmatic functions and also gain broad experience through a series of rotational assignments within and outside the Department. Upon completion of the 2 year internship, the PMF is eligible for noncompetitive appointment to SAMHSA at the GS-11 level and may subsequently be promoted to the GS-12 level without further competition.
