Correctional population data come from four data
collection series maintained by the Bureau of Justice Statistics
- Annual Probation
Survey annually provides counts of probationers supervised
by all federal, state, and local probation agencies in the United States
on the last day of the year. These counts include only adult probationers
who have been placed under the supervision of a probation agency as
part of a court order regardless of whether or not convicted.
National Prisoner
Statistics annually provides counts of the number of persons
in state and federal prison on the last day of the year. State and federal
prisons usually incarcerate those persons sentenced to serve more than
1 year in confinement, although this may vary by jurisdiction.
Survey of Jails
provides counts of the number of persons in local jails on the last
day of June; actual counts are provided every 5 years and estimates
from a sample of jails are provided in intervening years. Local jails
are defined as locally administered facilities that hold inmates beyond
arraignment, usually for more than 48 hours. Jail inmates may be detained
pending trial, awaiting sentencing, serving their sentence, or convicted
and awaiting transfer to other facilities.
- Annual Parole
Data Survey annually provides counts of parolees supervised
by all federal, state, and local parole agencies in the United States
on the last day of the year. These counts include only adults who are
on active or inactive parole supervision or other form of conditional
release including mandatory release following a term of incarceration.
