Victims of Tropical Storm Floyd Urged To Return SBA Applications

DANBURY, Conn. -- Connecticut homeowners, renters and business owners who have applied for disaster aid due to Tropical Storm Floyd and were mailed U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan applications are urged by federal and state officials to return the completed forms as soon as possible if they want to be considered for other disaster programs.
"Completing the SBA loan application does not obligate anyone to accept a loan, but it often opens doors to other types of assistance which do not require repayment," Federal Coordinating Officer Sharon L. Stoffel said. "If an individual does not qualify for an SBA loan, the applicant may then be referred to the state/federal Individual and Family Grant (IFG) program, as well as other programs.
SBA low-interest loans are offered to help eligible disaster victims restore or replace uninsured or underinsured disaster-damaged property. The IFG program provides funds for serious disaster-related needs. Examples include essential home repairs, replacement of personal property, medical and dental bills, and debris removal. These grants are administered only after the applicant has applied for and been declined by the SBA for a disaster loan.
State Coordinating Officer John T. Wiltse encourages Connecticut residents to complete and return these applications quickly. "The sooner people do this, the sooner financial assistance can be provided to them," he said.
Individuals who have not yet applied for disaster assistance may do so by calling 1-800-462-9029, 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the speech and hearing impaired. Both toll-free lines are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.
