Beckley, WV -- Officials from the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have established two mobile Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) to assist individuals affected by the severe storms, flooding and landslides of May 2 and continuing.
The mobile Disaster Recovery Centers, open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., will provide answers to questions, recovery information, and written materials about various assistance programs available to individuals and business owners. Some disaster programs include temporary housing assistance, low-interest disaster loans, and grants for serious needs and expenses.
A mobile center opens Wednesday, May 15, in the War Town Hall parking lot, 11701 Highway 16 South. It will remain open daily through Sunday, May 19. A second center opens on Wednesday next to the Covel Post Office on Main Street. It will remain at that site through Friday, May 17.
"The mobile Disaster Recovery Centers will be repositioned, depending on anticipated demand, to service other communities," said Justo Hernandez, the disaster's Federal Coordinating Officer.
"Many assistance programs are available for homeowners, renters and businesses," said Steve Kappa, the State Coordinating Officer, "and the mobile centers provide the opportunity to get questions answered."
Individuals affected by the disaster are urged to start the application process before visiting a center by calling FEMA's toll-free number at 1-800-621-3362. Hearing- and speech-impaired individuals may call TTY at 1-800-462-7585.
