Tazewell, VA -- As federal-state disaster recovery efforts to assist residents in hard-hit flood areas of southwestern Virginia and West Virginia gain momentum, a high-tech mobile disaster recovery center will make its first visit to the area on Monday and Tuesday, July 16-17.

Tazewell County residents who have applied for disaster assistance may visit the center at the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department in Bishop. The center will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The mobile center, staffed by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state specialists, has telecommunication and network computer links to assist registrants as well as provide updated information on applications already filed.

Center staff will provide information on available programs, including housing assistance, individual and family grants, Small Business Administration low-interest loan applications, business loans, mitigation and other disaster-related issues.

Disaster officials urged any county residents who have suffered storm-related damage to begin the disaster application process by calling 1-800-462-9029. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call toll-free 1-800-462-7585. The lines are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

Officials say that after registering, applicants should bring their registration number as well as their social security numbers when visiting the disaster center.
