Charleston, WV - Twelve more West Virginia counties have been declared eligible for federal and state snow emergency assistance, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Louis Botta, federal coordinating officer. That raises the total to 20.

The newly announced counties declared eligible for snow emergency assistance include Brooke, Hancock, Hardy, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio, Pendleton, Taylor, Tucker, Harrison and Wetzel.

The March 14 declaration esignated counties that experienced record or near-record snowfall. These counties are eligible for financial assistance for snow removal expenditures incurred during a 48-hour period.

Government entities such as state agencies, county and local governments may receive reimbursement for snow removal from emergency routes and other primary roads for emergency vehicle use. Eligible expenditures include de-icing, salting, sanding operations and related emergency protective measures. The previously announced counties declared eligible for snow emergency assistance included Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, Pocahontas and Preston counties.

Applicant briefings will be scheduled shortly to enable eligible parties the opportunity to submit a Request for Public Assistance, which must be submitted to the West Virginia state Public Assistance Officer within 30 days of the date of designation of the new areas. The request form may be submitted at the Applicant's Briefing, by mail, by fax or electronically. Applicants may obtain a copy of the request from the state emergency management organization, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Public Assistance Program Web Site, (www.fema.gov), or at the Applicant's Briefing.
