Media Fellowships and Internships

The Kaiser Family Foundation offers the following fellowship and internship opportunities for both U.S. and International journalists interested in health reporting.

The Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health - This program, designed for mid-career reporters and editors interested in U.S. health policy issues, combines a stipend of up to $55,000 for up to nine-months to carry out a research/reporting project focused squarely on U.S. health policy issues, with a series of program seminars and group site visits that address timely policy issues. Increasing emphasis is given to helping journalists report across different media, with training as needed. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or must work for an accredited U.S. media organization. The Kaiser Media Internships
- This 12-week summer internship program is for young journalists interested in specializing in health reporting, and with a particular commitment to coverage of health issues affecting diverse or immigrant communities. The program begins with a week-long series of briefings on health issues and health reporting in Washington, D.C.  Interns are then based for ten weeks at their newspaper/radio or TV station where they report on health issues, typically under the direction of the Health or Metro Editor/News Director. The program concludes with a three-day clip/DVD/tape critique session with leading health journalists in Boston. Strong writing skills and previous newsroom reporting experience are essential. The Kaiser Mini-Fellowships for Global Health Reporting
- This program, open to journalists working for English-language news organizations with target audiences in North America and/or Europe, awards mini-fellowships of up to US$10,000 to print, radio, television, and online journalists (including freelancers) to research and report on global health issues, with a particular focus on issues related to HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. The International Health Journalism Fellowship Project - The Kaiser Family Foundation sponsors opportunities for international health journalists with a strong interest in reporting on HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and related health issues. Started in 2004, the main initiatives so far have focused on India, Russia/Ukraine, and Southern Africa. More>>
