Landscape Analysis
Project Description:
As part of the implementation of the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment (SNFPA), direction is given for the Forests to conduct Landscape Analyses in order to provide an improved basis for project design in carrying out the direction and achieving the desired conditions, goals, and objectives of the SNFPA.
While a landscape analysis does not make any decisions for on-the-ground projects, it does provide an integrated analysis of the resources within 30,000 to 200,000 acre landscapes across the Forest. The Eldorado National Forest is using the larger watersheds as Landscape Analysis areas in order to provide integration of all the uses and resources at a scale where results are useful for analysis of the patterns of wildfire occurrence, wildlife use, and human use.
The Eldorado began Landscape Analysis in 2001 with the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes watershed, and to date have completed four Landscape Analyses: Middle Fork Cosumnes River, North Fork Cosumnes River, Slab-Chili Bar/Lower Middle Fork American, and Silver Creek. The current Landscape Analysis now in progress is the Rubicon River. The Forest is planning to complete the Upper South Fork American in 2006, and finish the forest with the Mokelumne River in 2007.
