Hoyer Statement on First Anniversary of Energy Independence Act

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the first anniversary of the enactment of the Energy Independence and Security Act:

“With the enactment of the Energy Independence and Security Act one year ago, we took an important step in changing our energy policy. We sought to reduce our dependence upon foreign oil, which threatens our national, economic, and environmental security. This historic legislation set an increase in vehicle fuel efficiency for the first time in a generation and made critical investments in domestic bio-fuels. It also included a provision I supported to manufacture the next generation of vehicles and advanced batteries. To meet our electricity needs, the law strengthened energy efficiency programs to curb waste and help reduce energy costs.

“While this legislation was a clear shift in our nation’s energy policy, there is still much more to be done. I look forward to working with President-elect Obama next year as we continue to make energy independence a top priority, beginning with an economic recovery package that invests in new energy technologies.”
