PURPOSE:

To provide the Commission with the results of the meeting of the Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI) held on October 28, 2002. These results - provided as summary minutes and the staff's answer to ACMUI recommendations - are submitted to the Commission for information purposes.

BACKGROUND:

The ACMUI advises the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff on issues that arise regarding the medical uses of byproduct material. The Committee provides the staff with information on how its regulations affect the medical community, as well as how they affect the treatment of patients.

The Committee members represent diverse areas within the practice of medicine. This broad representation of patient care ensures NRC receives balanced advice.

DISCUSSION:

The minutes of the October 28, 2002, ACMUI meeting are provided in Attachment 1 ; the transcript of the meeting is accessible in ADAMS via accession number ML023390066.

Attachment 2 is the staff response to the ACMUI recommendations made at the October 28, 2002, meeting.
