SECY-99-198
August 3, 1999
FOR: | The Commissioners |
FROM: | Janice Dunn Lee, Director /s/ Office of International Programs |
SUBJECT: | U.S. NATIONAL REPORT FOR THE CONVENTION ON NUCLEAR SAFETY |
PURPOSE:
To request Commission review of the U.S. National Report for the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) and to approve staff's intent to issue it in final.
DISCUSSION
In an April 30, 1999, memorandum, staff summarized U.S. limited participation at the first Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (April 12-23, 1999), including submission of the U.S. National Report drafted by NRC. At the meeting, the U.S. delegation invited the CNS Contracting Parties to submit questions on the U.S. National Report and offered to provide answers on an informal basis. The delegation also provided its supplement to the U.S. National Report before the close of the meeting, following its approval by the Commission.
In its April summary memorandum, to which was appended the National Report and the supplement, staff noted its intent to integrate comments received and to forward the report to the Commission by July 30, 1999, for approval before final publication. No comments on the U.S. National Report have been received to date. Pending Commission review, staff intends to issue it in final by August 30, 1999. Due to the volume of the National Report and because there were no changes to the early draft, staff has not enclosed the report. If Commission offices do not have copies of the National Report transmitted by my April 30 memorandum, please contact OIP and it will be provided.
