2.0 Site Status Summary

The U.S. Agri-Chemicals, Inc. (U.S. Agri-Chem) Fort Meade phostphate mine has historically been a producer of phosphate fertilizer for agriculture. Production has ceased at the plant. Project Manager: Denver Phares

The wet process phosphoric acid production plant. was first licensed by the Florida Bureau of Radiation Control for the processing and disposal of technically-enhanced concentrations of naturally-occuring radioactive materials (TENORM) in 1983. TENORM occurs as radium scale (radium 226) in pipes and process equipment, and in the associated process-area soils. The Florida Burea of Mine Reclamation administeres a premit for the operation and closure of the phosphogypsum stack; the onsite repository for te mine spoils. The phosphogypsum stack also serves as the repostitory for the mine spoils. The phosphosgypsum stack also serves as the repository for TENORM-contaminated equiptment and soils.

3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues

TENORM contaminated process equipment is collocated with the water treatment infrastructure. Impounded water continues to be treated to releasable standards, in preparation for final closure of the phosphogypsum stack. Decommissioning acivities will proceed when water treatment is completed, sometime before November 2009.
