2.0 Site Status Summary
The CF Industries Bonnie phosphate mine has historically been a producer of phosphate fertilizer for agriculture. Production has ceased at the plant.
Project Manger: M. Lynne Vadelund
The wet process phosphoric acid production plant was first licensed by the Florida Bureau of Radiation Control for the processing and disposal of technically-enhanced concentrations of naturally-occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) in the 1980s. TENORM occurs as radium scale (radium 226) in pipes and process equipment, and in the associated process-area soils. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation administers a permit for the operation and closure of the phosphogypsum stack; the onsite repository for the mine spoils. The phosphogypsum stack also serves as the repository for TENORM-contaminated equipment and soils. Final status soil sample analysis and dose calculations are in progress.
