There are many charities in St. Louis, but perhaps none of them are as extensive or synonymous with St. Louis, as Old Newsboys Day, which is spearheaded by the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis, LLC.
Old Newsboys Day is a charitable effort that has raised millions of dollars for hundreds of area children's charities. Our organization performs fundraising activities throughout the year, and money will be raised with the more than 200,000 special editions of the Suburban Journals being sold at hundreds of street corners. The project involves thousands of volunteers and contributors.
There's probably not one person in the St. Louis area that doesn't assist with Old Newsboys in some way. We hope that all St. Louisians will join in to contribute what they can to this worthy effort. Old Newsboys Day has a long history of community commitment.
A program first started by Duncan Bauman of the Globe-Democrat in 1957. To him, it was not just an event. It was a catalyst for community involvement, where individuals from all walks of life — Rotarians, Businesses, Organizations, High School Students, Families, and Friends — could join together for a common goal...to sell a special edition of the newspaper to raise much needed funds for St. Louis children's charities.
Funding, nearly at the road's end, for necessary items like clothing and medical supplies to ensure every child in the St. Louis area has an equal opportunity to live a healthy, educated life. The Suburban Journals assumed stewardship of the Old Newsboys Day project in 1988, shortly after the demise of the Globe Democrat. Now celebrating our 52nd campaign for children, Old Newsboys has raised more than $11 million to benefit more than 270 local children's charities.
Every year, on the Thursday before Thanksgiving thousands of volunteers wake up very early in the morning, put on their customary smile and Old Newsboys Day apron and take to the streets to raise money for children's organizations funded by the Old Newsboys Fund. There are more than 5,000 volunteers on more than 700 corners. The special edition of the newspaper is written by area high school students and highlights regional charities that benefit from Old Newsboys Day funding.
The mission of the Old Newsboys Day is simple — to ensure that children who are at risk in our community, because of abuse or poverty, receive adequate food, shelter, clothing, medical care and are provided equal opportunity for social development.
