House Overwhelmingly Approves Bill to Ensure Continued Access to Student Loans for American Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- 4/17/08 --The U.S. House of Representatives today overwhelmingly approved bipartisan legislation to ensure that the turmoil in the U.S. credit markets does not prevent any students or parents from accessing the financial aid they need to pay for college. The legislation was passed by a vote of 383-27.

The Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008 (H.R. 5715) would provide new protections, in addition to those already under current law, to ensure that families continue to have timely, uninterrupted access to federal college loans in the event that stress in the credit markets leads a significant number of lenders in the federally guaranteed student loan programs to substantially reduce their lending activity. The bill carries no additional cost for taxpayers.

Miller's Water Recycling Bill Passes Senate

Bill would create federal-municipal partnership for Bay Area water recycling projects

WASHINGTON, DC – 4/10/08 – Water recycling projects in Pittsburg and five other Bay Area communities moved one critical step forward today as the U.S. Senate approved Congressman George Miller’s (D – Martinez) legislation to provide federal assistance for these innovative local projects.

Miller’s bill, the Bay Area Regional Water Recycling Act, was one of several approved by the Senate in a package of bills. His bill would provide federal assistance to municipal efforts to increase the use of recycled water and decrease the amount of water taken from the San Francisco Bay Delta and other fresh water sources. The House approved Miller’s bill last July.

Chairman George Miller’s Statement on Senate Approval of Northern Mariana Islands Immigration Reform Legislation

WASHINGTON, DC – 4/10/08 – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee who has sought reform of the laws governing the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) for more than 15 years, issued the following statement today on the Senate’s approval of S.2739. That legislation, which was approved by a vote of 91-4, incorporates a provision that will bring the CNMI within the federal immigration system:

“Today, the Senate passed a bill to end the broken immigration system in the CNMI and help begin to restore human rights to individuals working there. The Senate’s good work today marks the first time that both the House and Senate have approved legislation closing the legal loopholes that have allowed some of the poorest men and women in the world to be lured to the CNMI, abused, and exploited in sweatshops in this American territory.
